Indigo The Art Studio

With grandfather and father both being artists, it is not surprising that Subhashini has taken to the field. Starting her quest quite early under her father Maniam Selven, she moved on to get a degree in Drawing & Painting from Stella Maris College , Madras University . Her talent further flowered at Singapore, where she moved after marriage, at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, where she pursued her Masters in Contemporary art. She also gained a special award of ‘Dedicated Practice’ from the University of Huddersfield in recognition of her outstanding performance during the course. She teaches and conducts workshops on Indian Art at Temple of Fine Arts, Singapore.
“Colour, Emotion and Music are the most interesting subjects for me. Being a visual artist trained in Indian classical music, my interest lies in understanding the intimate relationship between these three aspects of human experience”. As a young artist of the 21st century she dares to experiment with new materials and techniques, while still keeping her hold on to the Indian tradition in art by introducing elements of Indian miniatures in her imagery, thus chartering her own course in her creations. Subhashini has also been trained in classical Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam. Therefore Ragamala miniature paintings of the 16th century, that combined music, poetry and painting to express the beauty and uniqueness of the Raga, inspiring and impelling her to eagerly try reviving that art form and find its relevance to contemporary art practice is perhaps a natural course.
